Louis Pettinelli’s Lessons

inspiring generations

In addition to being an active performer in The Tri-State Area, Louis also maintains an active private studio of electric bass, upright bass, and cello students throughout the Tri-State Area. Lessons are offered in classical bass, jazz bass, and cello. In addition, Louis is available for instruction in musical theory. Louis’s students have been selected for ensembles such as New Jersey Region 3 Orchestra, New Jersey Region 3 Jazz Ensemble, NYU Summer Jazz Camps, and Berklee Summer Jazz Camps, just to name a few.

Louis offers in-home private lessons predominantly, and comes to you for your convenience. He also offers Skype lessons.

Louis’s lessons contain built-in music theory, as well as heavy emphasis on technique, phrasing, and the overall development of musicality. Furthermore, Louis’s lessons focus in particular on the practical application of musical concepts, rather than just their theoretical basis. In other words, the concepts in Louis’s lessons translate to real-world application. In addition, they are very student-oriented, and tailored to the needs of each individual student. Everyone has different musical goals, and progresses at their own unique and individual rates. Louis recognizes that, and creates a curriculum from which each student can thrive.

  • Louis is a friendly and accommodating upright bass instructor! He shapes instruction and assignments to reflect specific strengths and weaknesses.

  • Louis is a great observer from which he identifies sound and efficiency issues and then develops approaches to combat these deficiencies. He has a solid pragmatic regimen to build the foundation for executing difficult passages as well. He is open to ideas and constructively shapes one's playing and also reacts to what is working well.

  • I had one lesson with Louis for two hours. In those two hours he was not only able to analyze my form and find my inefficiencies, but also was able to instill in me both the knowledge and skills to step up my bass playing from beginner to intermediate almost overnight. He has a firm grasp of the bass and is also a phenomenal bassist.
